By 1990 there were mainstream english language soft-core magazines available in the UK from publishers both here and in North Ameirica.
The main british magazine was Derriere, and there were several from North America as detailed in the
post here, such as "Cheeks" and "Tail Ends".
Derriere and Cheeks both had a simalar approach. They both published sets of mainstream glamour or porn models where virtually all the photographs were centred on the bum-cheeks and arsehole of the featured model. The other less popular magazines in the niche followed a similar style.
"Tail Ends" followed a different plan. It would have a few scrappy individual model sets, usually barely bottom focused, but its main photo-pages were filled with single bottom- and anal-presentation photographs selected from old photo-sets of major models of past years, presumably the ones that photographers had been unable to sell or from sessions and models who were no longer current

I preferred Tail Ends to all the other magazines. I bought lots of mainstream girly magazines, and had my favourite models. At the time, as the average top shelf punter would be looking for sets where his favourite model was showing her cunt, or even holding her cunt open, I would be looking for sets where my favourites were showing their buttocks, spreading them, holding them apart, and most importantly, presenting their arse-holes. Buying Tail Ends meant that I could usually find lots of individual up-the-bum shots of the women I liked best.
But the real change came in towards the end of the 1990s.
I would date the change from the start of publication of "Buttman" magazine around 1997. The Buttman stable had specialised in videos featuring women's buttocks, anuses, and anal sex. When they launched the related magazine, that focus transferred to it.
Buttman magazine wasn't easy to obtain in the UK but I was able to buy copies through a local specialist shop. The most wonderful thing for me about the magazine was that it consistently featured women with thier arseholes a-gape, so that one could see the hot pink insides of their rectums. The anal sex, the anal objectisnsertions, the models presenting their spread bum-cheeks and puckered arseholes, were not there as incidentals to some boring fucking, they were the entire point of the magazine.
It was the high-point of porn, soft and hard, for me, and it came at the very moment that Top Shelf porn declined with the rise of the web.
The important thing about the female arse to me is that it isn't meant for sex. it's meant for shitting and farting. Most women are embarrassed and ashamed about these bodily functions, and for most of them anal sex is uncomfortable and pleasureless. What could be better than have a woman accept being fucked in it.
